Groupe Etanco is a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of building fastener and fixing systems. It is headquartered in Paris and employs 660 people in six sites. The Group has a full range of 80,000 products grouped under four categories: Fastening, Over-Roofing, Safety and Facades which allow it to offer products adapted to the specific market requirements, particularly in terms of environmental and European regulatory constraints.

Etanco is a traditional LSK active partner. Most LSK trainings take place in French Etanco headquarters.

In the current economic climate, we have to say that we have difficulties to go on with our activities as in the past years.

This world crisis having a severe impact on the steel industry and in the construction market, LSK is obviously in the heart of the storm waiting for a possible improvement.

This is the reason why we have not yet sent you the call for membership for 2009. During the annual General Assembly meeting, which will be held before June 30th, the members will discuss the future of the association and the decisions to take in the short term. We have to admit that we have to reduce our activities in a significant way.

Until conditions improve we will try to maintain some promotion activities in our new internet website

Do not hesitate to share with us your best case studies like for example the one that Steelhouse from Greece sent us recently.

We do hope that this situation will be temporary and we have confidence in the residential market construction activity in Europe because we do believe that this market will recover soon fueled by the demand.

Thanks to the pilot ArcelorMittal Research in Liège – Belgium- which has given the necessary means and resources to lead this project.

WiSH, it is also 5 700 working hours within 18 months challenge where are involved multi-disciplinary experts, engineering offices, technical centres linked to a five Work Package program:

• WP 1 -Transform the Method into an useful design package
• WP 2 -Validation by the control offices and administrations
• WP 3 -Dissemination of the method
• WP 4 -Prepare the actions for a correct and optimal use
• WP 5 –Coordination

The LSK Association is mainly concerned by promotion and dissemination of the design package starting with Belgium, France and Spain by means of six workshops, training cessions preparation and IT-based communication on the LSK Internet site.

We believe that an easy design tool is more appropriate and it also contributes to public awareness of the benefits of use of light steel frame for housing.

With four language versions available, I’m convinced that this research project will make easier for professionals, architects, design offices and builders, the steel frame constructive knowledge in Europe.

WiSH is currently in Beta version and is tested by selected professionals. We will be pleased to announce the launch of WiSH 1.0 on our website very soon (April 2009).

Dibsa was commissioned by the main contractor to produce a design for the roof structure that achieved the architect’s requirement for an asymetrical roofscape to stand approximately 5m above the level of the installed accommodation modules. Conventional truss design was discounted due to transport logistics and potential handling problems.

Dibsa proposed a system of load bearing central tower structures onto which were attached lattice truss frames spanning from the eaves to the top of the towers. The prefabricated truss frames were only 900mm deep, thus allowing fast roof loading and safe construction without the need for extensive scaffolding at roof level.

A major concern of the client was the need to move in before the end of year. The constuction begun in late June and ended before the first rainfalls in October.

Both houses occupy an area of about 645m2 and includes basements which were built out of reinforced concrete. Above that lightweight cold formed, steel profiles together with drywall systems and interior and exterior insulation systems were used.

The lightweight of the constuction in the high seismicity area enabled us to minimize both vertical and horizontal loads and thus be economical.

SteelHouse as well as the client wanted to stick to the excellent arcitectural design. That included slim vertical surfaces both on the interior and the exterior of the houses, metallic elements in view, hidden lighting and drywall decorative surfaces which were easily achieved.

Fougerolle is a subsidiary of Eiffage, which is ranked 6th among European construction companies.

Fougerolle Senegal is a Senegalese business operating in civil engineering and construction, highways, roads and services but also in maritime and port engineering which are its original fields of activity in Senegal.

The project

To be sympathetic to the building’s architecture, the designers chose a solution employing light-gauge steel sections for this difficult renovation project on an occupied site.

The 60 tonnes of sections, delivered in containers by Profil du futur, a member of the Arcelor Mittal Group, were assembled on site, and then lifted into their final position by means of a crane. As a result of the steel solution, the re-roofing work took only 4 weeks. Another major imperative, work had to be completed before the arrival of the rainy season and above all the work could not be allowed to prevent the opening of the offices. The old wooden frame was therefore progressively dismantled to be replaced by a steel frame whose trusses measured no less than 10 m wide by 50 m long. A project, moreover, that enabled the training of Senegalese structural steelworkers.
